Graduate Primary Teaching Assistant: Person Specification

  • The ideal Graduate Primary Teaching Assistant will have achieved (or be on course to achieve) a 2:1 or above from a top university in any subject
  • A genuine interest in working with primary-aged children (4–11 years)
  • You must show patience, empathy and a flexible, can-do attitude — this Graduate Primary Teaching Assistant role requires someone who is happy to get stuck in wherever needed
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A long-term interest in education, child psychology, teaching, or pastoral development — ideal for aspiring teachers, child mental health specialists or educational psychologists
  • Some experience working with children (in schools, tutoring, mentoring, summer camps etc) is helpful, but not essential

There is potential for school to facilitate up to three Graduate Primary Teaching Assistants from September 2025.

Graduate Primary Teaching Assistant: Role Specification

This Graduate Primary Teaching Assistant role will see you working alongside experienced teachers and support staff across the full primary age range (EYFS–KS2), helping to deliver lessons, guide small group work, and provide tailored support to individual pupils. You will become a familiar, trusted presence in the classroom and around the school, contributing to a culture where every child feels seen, heard, and supported.

As a Graduate Primary Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Support pupils in class and in small group sessions, especially in key areas such as early literacy and numeracy
  • Help create a safe, stimulating, and inclusive classroom environment
  • Work closely with teachers to identify pupils’ needs and help adapt lesson delivery accordingly
  • Model clear, positive communication and build strong, supportive relationships with young learners
  • Contribute to school life through play supervision, assemblies, and enrichment activities
  • Gain regular training and mentoring to help you grow professionally
  • This Graduate Primary Teaching Assistant post is full-time. You will work Monday–Friday, 8:30am to 3:00pm, during term time.
