You've earned your English degree (2:1 or higher) in English Language, English Literature, or a related discipline. You have a passion for words, storytelling, and communication. Now it's time to put that knowledge into action and discover if teaching is your calling.

You'll Need:

  • An English degree (2:1 or higher) in English Language, English Literature, or a related discipline – your subject knowledge is essential
  • Passion for education – you genuinely want to help young people succeed
  • Enthusiasm and resilience – teaching is rewarding but can be challenging
  • Commitment to safeguarding – all candidates will undergo enhanced DBS checks

What You'll Actually Be Doing

Supporting Student Success

  • Deliver targeted 1:1 and small-group interventions for students who need extra support
  • Help GCSE and A-Level students master challenging texts, essay techniques, and language analysis
  • Work with learners across all abilities—from those building foundational literacy skills to high-achievers pursuing top grades
  • Support reading, writing, and spoken language development across the curriculum

Building Your Teaching Skills

  • Assist classroom teachers in delivering engaging English lessons across language and literature
  • Develop strategies for making complex texts and concepts accessible to all learners
  • Learn classroom management techniques in a supportive environment
  • Observe excellent teaching practice firsthand
  • Gain experience with creative writing workshops and structured debate activities

Making a Real Difference

  • See students' confidence grow as their reading and writing skills flourish
  • Help young people develop critical thinking and communication skills they'll use for life
  • Contribute to a department that achieves strong results year after year
  • Inspire the next generation of writers, communicators, and critical thinkers

What We're Looking For

It Would Be Great If You Have:

  • Any tutoring, mentoring, or volunteering experience with young people
  • Familiarity with the UK secondary English curriculum and set texts
  • Clear ambitions to pursue qualified teacher status
  • Experience leading reading groups, creative writing projects, or drama activities
