KPI Education is working in partnership with a forward-thinking and inclusive secondary school in Hemel Hempstead to recruit a Behaviour Mentor (Sports & Exercise Graduate) for a September 2026 start.
This is an exciting opportunity for a graduate with a degree in Sports & Exercise Science, Sports Coaching, Physical Education, or a related discipline to gain invaluable school-based experience while supporting students to overcome behavioural and emotional barriers to learning.
The Role
As a Behaviour Mentor, you will work closely with the school's pastoral team, teaching staff, and SEN department to support students who require additional guidance with behaviour, engagement, and emotional regulation. Using your sporting background, you will help motivate students, build resilience, and encourage positive choices both inside and outside the classroom.
You will develop strong relationships with students, acting as a positive role model while helping them succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 mentoring and pastoral support for students with behavioural or emotional needs.
- Support students in managing behaviour, improving engagement, and developing positive coping strategies.
- Build trusting relationships with students, promoting confidence, resilience, and self-esteem.
- Use sport and physical activity to engage students and encourage teamwork, discipline, and wellbeing.
- Work alongside teachers to support positive behaviour in lessons.
- Assist with behaviour intervention programmes and personalised support plans.
- Monitor student progress and contribute to behaviour and wellbeing reviews.
- Liaise with parents, pastoral staff, and external agencies where appropriate.
- Help create a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
- Support extracurricular sporting activities and enrichment opportunities where possible.
Candidate Requirements
The successful Behaviour Mentor will have:
- A minimum 2:1 degree in Sports & Exercise Science, Sports Coaching, Physical Education, or a related subject.
- A genuine passion for supporting young people and promoting positive behaviour.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach when working with challenging behaviours.
- The ability to motivate and inspire students from a range of backgrounds.
- Experience working with young people through coaching, mentoring, tutoring, sports clubs, or youth work (desirable but not essential).
- An interest in pursuing a career in teaching, pastoral leadership, behaviour support, youth work, or educational psychology.
