Graduate English Class Tutor

Secondary School | Liverpool
November 2026 – End of Academic Year Initially
Full-Time | Long-Term Position
Salary: Up to £540 per week

Are you a high-achieving English graduate with a real passion for language, literature and helping young people develop their academic abilities?

Are you considering a future in teaching and looking for an opportunity to gain meaningful, day-to-day classroom experience before committing to formal teacher training?

Would you like to become an active part of a secondary school's English department, supporting lessons, contributing to learning and developing the practical skills needed to become a confident classroom practitioner?

A well-regarded and forward-thinking Liverpool secondary school is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and academically strong graduate to join its English department as a Graduate English Class Tutor.

The Role – Graduate English Class Tutor

As a Graduate English Class Tutor, you will work alongside experienced English teachers, becoming a regular presence in the classroom and supporting the delivery of engaging, well-structured lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4.

Rather than focusing on occasional tutoring sessions, this position will give you the opportunity to become immersed in everyday classroom practice. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the delivery of English lessons across KS3 and KS4, working alongside the class teacher to maintain engagement and encourage participation.
  • Taking an active role in whole-class learning, helping explain concepts, reinforce subject knowledge and guide pupils through lesson activities.
  • Providing targeted support to individuals and small groups while maintaining a strong focus on the wider classroom.
  • Helping students develop their reading comprehension, written communication, literary analysis and critical thinking skills.
  • Supporting the teaching of GCSE English Language and Literature, including preparation for examinations and the development of effective revision techniques.
  • Assisting with lesson planning, preparing classroom resources and adapting activities to support different learning abilities.
  • Monitoring pupil understanding and progress, providing feedback to teachers and identifying areas where additional support may be beneficial.
  • Helping establish a positive, purposeful and academically focused classroom environment.

Who We’re Looking For

The school is keen to hear from ambitious graduates with strong subject knowledge and a genuine interest in developing a career within secondary education.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • A 2:1 degree or above in English, English Literature or a closely related subject.
  • A clear interest in pursuing teacher training and a long-term career in education.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas in an accessible way.
  • Strong subject knowledge and enthusiasm for sharing a passion for English with young people.
  • Confidence, patience and the ability to build positive relationships with secondary-aged pupils.
  • A proactive, organised and professional approach, with the flexibility to support different classroom activities.
  • Previous experience working with young people or within an educational setting would be advantageous, but is not essential.

What the School Offers

  • A full-time, long-term Graduate English Class Tutor position within a supportive Liverpool secondary school.
  • Competitive weekly pay of up to £540.
  • Consistent, hands-on classroom experience working alongside qualified English teachers.
  • The opportunity to develop practical skills in lesson delivery, classroom management and pupil assessment.
  • Guidance, mentoring and professional development from experienced teaching staff.
  • Excellent preparation for PGCE and school-based teacher training routes.
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to pupils' progress while building a strong foundation for your future teaching career.
