Graduate Pastoral Teaching Assistant

Are you a graduate who naturally connects with young people and wants a career where you can make a genuine difference?

Interested in pastoral care, behaviour, mentoring, psychology, safeguarding or student wellbeing?

Could you be the trusted role model who helps a young person overcome barriers and succeed at school?

KPI Education is looking for an outstanding Graduate Pastoral Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and inclusive London secondary school from September.

This role offers something different from a traditional Teaching Assistant position. While academic support will form part of your responsibilities, your primary focus will be on mentoring, engagement, behaviour, attendance and helping pupils overcome barriers to learning.

If you're considering a future career in teaching, educational psychology, youth work, counselling, social work or pastoral leadership, this could provide invaluable experience.

Why Apply?

  • £26,000–£30,000 salary / minimum £550 per week
  • Full-time role throughout the 2026/27 academic year
  • Work closely with the school's pastoral and inclusion teams
  • Provide regular 1:1 mentoring for identified pupils
  • Support students experiencing barriers to education
  • Help improve attendance, punctuality and engagement
  • Support positive behaviour and classroom routines
  • Develop strong professional relationships with young people
  • Gain experience supporting pupils with SEN and EHCPs
  • Work alongside teachers, Heads of Year and pastoral leaders
  • Build outstanding experience for psychology and education careers
  • Potential to extend your position or explore teacher training in 2027

A School That Invests in Its Students

This large and diverse secondary school believes that academic achievement and excellent pastoral care go hand in hand.

The school has an established pastoral structure, with Heads of Year, SEN professionals, teaching staff and senior leaders working collaboratively to identify pupils who may need additional support.

Some students simply need a positive adult role model. Others may require more structured mentoring to help them improve their confidence, organisation, behaviour or relationship with education.

Your job will be to help those pupils move forward.

What Will Your Role Involve?

No two days are likely to look exactly the same. Responsibilities could include:

  • Delivering 1:1 pastoral mentoring
  • Running small-group interventions
  • Supporting pupils with challenging behaviour
  • Helping students regulate emotions and re-engage with learning
  • Supporting pupils transitioning between lessons
  • Monitoring attendance and academic engagement
  • Working with students at risk of falling behind
  • Supporting pupils with SEN, additional needs or EHCPs
  • Helping resolve low-level behavioural issues
  • Encouraging confidence, resilience and independence
  • Providing classroom support where required
  • Recording interventions and communicating progress to relevant staff
  • Supporting enrichment and extracurricular activities

Who Are We Looking For?

KPI Education wants to hear from graduates with emotional intelligence, resilience, excellent communication skills and a genuine desire to support young people.

Degrees in Psychology, Criminology, Sociology, Education, Sports, English, Humanities and related subjects could be particularly relevant, although graduates from all academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Previous experience with young people is advantageous, but potential, personality and commitment are equally important.

If you're looking for a graduate role where you can build meaningful experience while having a measurable impact on young people's lives, this opportunity deserves your attention.
