Do you want to gain invaluable experience while making a real difference in the lives of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges, and communication difficulties?
If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join a Primary School Inclusion Team as a Graduate SEN 1:1 Teaching Assistant.
This role will provide you with hands-on experience in supporting children with diverse needs in the classroom and collaborating with a dedicated team of professionals. You will work closely with the school’s SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), as well as the Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) and Educational Psychologist (EP), gaining a rich understanding of SEN provision and developing a range of support strategies.

Role Overview:
As a Graduate SEN 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will work with individual students with SEN to help them access the curriculum, build social and emotional skills, and support their overall development. Your role will include providing tailored assistance to children with ASD, SEMH, and communication difficulties, ensuring they have the support they need to thrive both academically and personally. You’ll be an integral part of the Inclusion Team, working in partnership with other professionals and school staff to ensure each child’s needs are met.
Key Responsibilities:
- 1:1 Support for SEN Students:
Provide dedicated 1:1 support for children with ASD, SEMH, and communication difficulties. Assist in implementing individualised learning plans, strategies, and interventions to ensure each child’s needs are effectively met. - Classroom Assistance:
Support the class teacher in managing classroom activities, ensuring all children, including those with SEN, are fully engaged and participating. Tailor support to students’ specific needs to help them access the lesson content. - Social and Emotional Support:
Offer emotional support to students with SEMH difficulties. Help children develop social skills, self-regulation techniques, and coping strategies to improve their emotional well-being and behavior. - Communication Support:
Work closely with students who have communication difficulties, including those with speech and language challenges. Assist in implementing speech and language interventions developed by the Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to support language development and communication. - Promote Inclusion:
Encourage an inclusive environment in which all children, regardless of ability or challenge, are able to thrive. Assist in creating an atmosphere where students with SEN feel safe, supported, and confident in expressing themselves. - Behavioral and Sensory Support:
Support students with ASD or SEMH in understanding classroom routines, managing anxiety, and using positive behaviour strategies. Provide additional support during transitions or challenging situations to ensure students are able to cope effectively.
Who We Are Looking For:
- Graduate with a Passion for SEN: You should have a degree (preferably in psychology, education, or a related field) and a strong interest in working with children with special educational needs.
