Are you a high-achieving graduate seeking a practical, school-based route into teaching that leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) without completing a traditional PGCE?

A number of high-performing mainstream secondary schools in Portsmouth are recruiting outstanding graduates to join their unsalaried, in-school teacher training programmes, offering hands-on classroom experience supported by expert mentors and senior leaders.

The Role – Graduate Teacher (Trainee)

You will train full-time or part-time within a mainstream secondary school, following a structured, practice-led programme.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Teaching your specialist subject across Key Stages 3 and 4, with opportunities for Key Stage 5 experience.
  • Gradually increasing teaching responsibility in a supported environment.
  • Observing and delivering lessons alongside experienced teachers.
  • Taking part in regular professional training focused on classroom practice and behaviour management.
  • Receiving ongoing feedback and mentoring in preparation for QTS within one academic year.
