Start Date: September 2026
Non-Salaried, School-Based Training Route | QTS Awarded

Are you a high-achieving graduate seeking a practical, school-based route into primary teaching that leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) without completing a traditional university-led PGCE?

A number of primary schools in Southampton are recruiting outstanding graduates to join their non-salaried, in-school teacher training programmes. This route offers extensive classroom experience, supported by expert mentors and senior leaders, and provides a high-quality alternative to a PGCE.

The Role – Graduate Teacher (Trainee)

You will train full-time or part-time within a primary school, following a structured, practice-led teacher training programme.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting and delivering learning across the primary curriculum, including English and Mathematics.
  • Gradually increasing teaching responsibility within a supportive training environment.
  • Observing and delivering lessons alongside experienced primary teachers.
  • Participating in regular professional training focused on classroom practice, behaviour management, and effective lesson delivery.
  • Receiving ongoing feedback and mentoring to support your progress towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) within one academic year.

What’s on Offer

  • A non-salaried, school-based teacher training route within primary schools.
  • A high-quality alternative to a university-led PGCE, focused on practical classroom experience.
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) awarded upon successful completion of the programme.
  • Structured mentoring and continuous professional development.
  • Strong preparation for a long-term career in primary education.
  • Excellent employment prospects within partner schools following qualification.

Ideal Candidate

We are seeking high-calibre graduates who are committed to pursuing a career in primary teaching.

You will:

  • Hold a 2:1 or above in any degree subject.
  • Have achieved GCSE Maths and English at grade 4/C or above (or recognised equivalents).
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills, professionalism, and academic credibility.
  • Be motivated to work with young children in a primary school setting.
  • Have the legal right to work in the UK.
